IB Diploma Programme October 31 update
Y2 cohort-Extended Essays First Drafts in!
Diploma candidates are turning in their first drafts of their Extended Essays today. If you see these candidates, ask them about their work, which they've been engaged in since last December:
Thanks to the talented AISC IB teachers and staff who as EE supervisors guide the students along the nearly completely independent scholarly research and writing in the student's chosen field.
Y2 supervisors: Shari Abbott, Flor Martin, Greg Israel, Walter Basnight, Joelle Basnight, Shira Daryn, Jayanthi Ramakrishna, Kate Wentworth and Jacob Solomon from Pamoja IB Online.
Supervisors will be giving their permitted full feedback on students' drafts over the next several weeks, ahead of the EE final draft deadline of January 29, 2018.
Y1 cohort-Extended Essay Mela Thursday November 2nd, lunch and E block
Our twelve Y1 diploma candidates will meet with subject supervisors to inform and narrow down their choice for subject, topic and supervisor for their Extended Essays.
Training: IB teachers honing their practice
The IB requires that all teachers are trained the subject or supervison areas every five years. The following teachers are participating in trainings this semester:
Peter Jacobson - EE Coordination, September, Bangkok
Laksmi Vijayaraghavan - Biology, October, Kuala Lumpur
Greg Israel - Economics, November, Mumbai
Mano Krishnan - Math SL, November, Mumbai
Jayanthi Ramakrishnan - Physics IA, November, Mumbai
Shira Daryn - Chemistry IA - November/December, online
Last weekend, AISC's National Honor Society, led by Flor Martin and student president Vishnu Sriram led over 200 AISC and local students in an Olive Beach clean up and mural refresh.
We are pleased to report that Y2 candidate Mario Grippay will be sharing his TOK presentation,
"What role does language play in the way we come to accept or reject secondhand knowledge?" (link to video here)
with the AISC Board of Directors on Wednesday, November 15, between 5 and 6 pm. Board Meetings take place in the BBT and are open to the community.
TOK presentations were given by all Y2 candidates and students in our TOK class, led by Walter Basnight, in early October. The BBT was packed with candidates' families, Y1 students and 10th grade social studies students in attendance. Please see Mr. Basnight's TOK presentation website here for more details on and links to all of the outstanding presentations.
Link to Kavya Gopinath and Nate Malone's TOK presentation: "To what extent is there value in historical judgements?" referencing the controversy about the removal of statues of Confederate leaders in the US.
Advanced Placement
We've just submitted our May 2018 AP examination planning document to the College Board. We anticipate AISC students will sit for 217 AP examinations in May, 2018, the most ever at AISC.
This year, AP Exams (AP May 2018 exam schedule here) start later than usual, with the two week period for exams running from May 7 - May 18th, with late exams (due to conflicts) May 22-24.
